Bamboo straw care tips
About bamboo straws
Our hot favourite reusable straws are handmade from whole bamboo stalks. Nothing recompressed, no additional materials. The bamboo straws that we produce are the ultimate natural straw! A smooth finish on interior and exterior surfaces makes these straws easy to clean and very long-lasting. Our straws are made to be reused.
We have been pioneers in bamboo straw production since 2013. The straws we make are of high quality and reusable hundreds of times. Production is labour-intensive. Every single straw is made by hand. We never use chemicals, fungicides or any additives and our production process is low-impact and low-to-zero-waste from start to end. Know your makers -- it makes all the difference. Our bamboo sources are sustainable -- a mix of homegrown bamboo groves and wild bamboo. We never compromise on quality. Your straws are made to last.
How to clean your bamboo straw
So you’ve got yourself a bunch of straws, drunk your first smoothie, posted your pic on Instagram… now you’ve got a straw to clean!
Our straws are made from whole bamboo stalks - nothing recompressed! - which makes them easy to clean and maintain. A well made bamboo straw is long-lasting, and cleaning is easy!
All you need is to rinse them out under the tap after everyday use or shake in a jar of warm soapy water if you like. Every month or so, you can boil a pot of vinegar water mix and soak the straws for a few mins if you want a super thorough clean! We use an electric kettle, so we just pour boiling water into a pan or pot and add a spoonful of vinegar for the soak. (Vinegar is optional!)
Easy peasy, we told you so!
Important tips:
1. Always let your bamboo straws dry fully. They dry very quickly!
2. Dry them flat - not standing up - so that water does not collect at the bottom.
3. Store your straws in a well-ventilated place, and never in air-tight containers or jars.
Q&A
How long can a straw last? Will it degrade if I don't use it for awhile?
Our founder Mel has famously used a set of straws for around three years. Her very first two straws - very rough cuts - still sit proudly on her desk after she first cut them from scrap bamboo in 2013! So bamboo straws will last as long as you take care of them. While Mel is probably just trying to see how long she can go with hers, most of our customers use their straws for about a year.
However, we recommend you to replace your straw should you notice any significant discolouration or change in taste. Bamboo straws should always taste neutral - not affecting the drink.
Can I taste a "bamboo flavour" when using bamboo straws?
While some people are more sensitive to tastes and flavours, bamboo straws are very neutral. There is no additional taste and the bamboo straw will not affect or alter the flavour of your drink.
Will bamboo straws retain the flavours of the drink?
If you encounter this after drinking strong-flavoured drinks like coffee, we recommend scrubbing the inside of the straw with a cleaning brush and soaking in hot water. This will remove any flavours that you feel are retained.
We bought some bamboo straws from somewhere else and they have a strange smell. Will boiling help?
Unfortunately, not all bamboo straws are made equal. We get this question a lot. Bamboo straws should smell and taste neutral - no additional flavours and no peculiar smells. If boiling your straws does not help, then the problem lies with the production process. Some makers claim to use "natural" processes, yet use chemicals in their production process. This is totally unnecessary by the way! We NEVER use any chemicals, preservatives, pesticides, fungicides. Please be cautious when purchasing all-natural goods and make sure that the maker / shop's values align with yours. We cannot vouch for the quality of straws sold elsewhere.
